Fangirling Chinese Novels

The Pillow Book Original Theme Song by Tang Qi – English Translation

Beside translating Shan Shan the Chinese novel, Lidge is now dabbling in translating Chinese song. Such a talented girl who can’t read or speak Chinese, lol. She has just finished reading The Pillow Book One Viet version so I made her translate the song. I have edited them to the best of my ability. Since both of us are bananas who can’t read Chinese, please take what we’ve translated with a grain of salt. Just enjoy the melody and lyrics penned by Tang Qi. Oh, today is the 3 months anniversary of the blog, the 47th posts, lol. (A big thank you to Phong Nhi for helping me to put the subtitles and uploaded it to youtube).

Singer: Dong Zhen (董贞)
Lyrics: Tang Qi Gong Zi (唐七公子)
Composer: Dong Zhen (董贞)
English Translation: Lidge & Peanuts

Cāng hé jiàn wǎn qiān lǐ shuāng
Cang He sword is wielded, thousand of miles filled with frost
Qīng chéng yī yè xuě cāng máng
One beautiful night, endless snow
Shéi bái yī diǎn méi zhuāng
Who wears white, dotted with plum flowers?
Wù rù tán lín fā rǎn xiāng
Stray into the purple red forest, hair still sweet smelling
Fó dù yě dù bù le gé shì de lí shāng
Buddhism also can’t erase the pain of a lifetime of separation
Pú tí huā kāi mǎn gōng qiáng
Bodhi flowers bloom all over the palace walls
(Feng Jiu: “With the weapon, are you planning to fight with someone again?”)
Huā xià shì shéi duì yǐng chéng shuāng
Underneath the flowers, who is that pair of shadow?
(Feng Jiu: “Then you bring me along. I will not bring you trouble.”)
Mèng lǐ kàn bù jiàn sī niàn de fāng xiàng
In the dream, one can’t see the future of longing
(Feng Jiu: “I am not big, you can simply put me in your bosom.” Dong Hua: “You are drunk.”)
Yán xīn mò yī fāng
Stir a new inkwell
(Feng Jiu: “Maybe a little.”)
Jiāng qián yuán xiě zài zhěn shàng
To write the story of a former love fate on the pillow
(Dong Hua: “Can you find your way home? I will send you back.”)
Zhěn shàng shū shū le jǐ duàn jǐ xíng
The Pillow Book, many sentences many paragraphs have been written
Zhāi xià qiān nián qián de yī duàn yuè guāng
Can only pluck one part of the moon of thousand years ago
Děng fó líng shèng fàng
Wait until Buddhism bells ring loudly
Jiāng méi yǎn shēn cáng
Keep the facial features deeply hidden
Zài kāi chū huí yì lǐ nǐ zhī de mó yàng
In the reemerging memory, you are aware of my appearance

Suō luó shù páng huā jìng wǎn
Next to the Cyathea tree, flowers are still at night
Xià xián yuè zhào zhú yǐng cháng
Waning moon illuminates the length of shadow
Shéi chuí diào lěng hé táng
Who is fishing by the cold lotus pond?
Huí yì guò wǎng bēi zhōng liáng
Recalling past memories until the cup is cold
Fó dù yě dù bù le gé shì de lí shāng
Buddhism also can’t erase the pain of a lifetime of separation
Pú tí huā kāi mǎn gōng qiáng
Bodhi flowers bloom all over the palace walls
Huā xià shì shéi duì yǐng chéng shuāng
Underneath the flowers, who is that pair of shadow?
(Dong Hua: “When was this?” Feng Jiu: “It was very recent.”)
Mèng lǐ kàn bù jiàn sī niàn de fāng xiàng
In the dream, one can’t see the future of longing
(Dong Hua: “Don’t move around, otherwise how to place the hairpin back?” Feng Jiu: “Okay.”)
Yán xīn mò yī fāng
Stir a new inkwell
(Feng Jiu: “I am sure I did not remember wrongly. I have excellent memory.”)
Jiāng qián yuán xiě zài zhěn shàng
(Feng Jiu: “We foxes have excellent memory.” Dong Hua: “Okay.”)
To write the story of a former love fate on the pillow
Zhěn shàng shū shū le jǐ duàn jǐ xíng
(Dong Hua: “You have mistaken me for another person again. Who am I?”)
The Pillow Book, many sentences many paragraphs have been written
Zhāi xià qiān nián qián de yī duàn yuè guāng
(Feng Jiu: “Dijun ar. Dong Hua.”)
Can only pluck one part of the moon of thousand years ago
Děng fó líng shèng fàng
Wait until Buddhism bells ring loudly
Jiāng méi yǎn shēn cáng
Keep the facial features deeply hidden
Zài kāi chū huí yì lǐ nǐ zhī de mó yàng
In the reemerging memory, you are aware of my appearance

Zài kāi chū huí yì lǐ nǐ zhī de mó yàng
In the reemerging memory, you are aware of my appearance
(Feng Jiu: “You will gaze the stars from here, whereas I will be holding on to your feet.”)
Rèn chū wǒ de mó yàng
Recognise my appearance
(Feng Jiu: “When can I bring you to Qing Qiu to gaze the stars?”)

  1. Thank You. LOVE it!

    • Thanks. I feel the Hua Xu Yin’s theme song lyrics & melody is better than this one. I find the lyrics for The Pillow Book written by Tang Qi is not as good as another version which is written by someone else. But since she is the author, I’ll stick to her version. I think she should concentrate on writing books, not lyrics, lol.

  2. Thanks a lot for sharing English translation. I love you peanuts ❤
I feel like the lyric is almost all about Dijun. I can see Tang Qi give a lot of love for him. Lucky DongHua 😄

    • You are welcome. Haha, everyone loves DH. Did u read he is my fav male character in a xian xia novel? Anyway TQ did mention abt Feng Jiu, “Who wears white, dotted with plum flowers.” 1 more week, book 2 will be out, I hope it won’t be disappointing as I’ve high hope.
