You’re My Glory (你是我的荣耀) – Chapter 17

Hi from Okinawa 🙂 The title in the novel is not really about the King of Glory mobile game but Jing Jing basking in Yu Tu’s glory.

Chapter 17 (translated by peanuts and edited by hoju)

When Qiao Jing Jing and big sister Ling arrived at the arranged place of meeting, they found out that they were not the only ones invited. There were also the rumoured, tentative male leading actor and his agent.

Director Li’s assistant was very apologetic. “There is something pressing in Beijing and we’ve to go back at night, so we had everyone meet together. You don’t mind, right?”

There was nothing really to mind, since everyone was only chatting together.

Director Li was very friendly. Everyone drank tea together, and they didn’t talk too much about the movie. These famous great directors have their own method of observing people. Sometimes, an unconscious word or action will decide whether you successfully get the role.

After chatting for about half an hour, when they were talking about some currently-fashionable stuff, the male leading actor’s agent suddenly said, “Jing Jing, we’re also playing the game that you’re the game ambassador for. It’s really very popular but very difficult to advance in ranked match. When will you take us along?”

There was silence around the table. Big sister Ling’s eyes were about to spit fire.

None of Director Li’s people spoke, but Qiao Jing Jing said, “What is your ranking?”

The agent said: “I’m only platinum.” (ranking from low to high: bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond, star, strongest king and king of glory)

Qiao Jing Jing calmly said: “My ranking is high, so if I take you along, it will increase the difficulty. Give me your mobile phone and I will help you play a game.”

Qiao Jing Jing’s Wang Zhaojun carried the team to win the game and also took the winning-side MVP (Most Valuable Player) title.

At the end, when he was leaving, Director Li’s smile was very kind. “Both of you young people are pretty good, but Jing Jing…” He suddenly mentioned Qiao Jing Jing by name.

“This role is very suitable for you, except that you are too thin. Thus you may need to gain a little weight.”

Big sister Ling’s eyes immediately lit up.

After Qiao Jing Jing left, Yu Tu cleaned out the dust in the projector, and then there was nothing else to do. He returned to the living room and began to think deeply on why he had agreed to wait for Qiao Jing Jing to come back. But the main point seemed even more to be, why did Qiao Jing Jing feel at ease leaving him alone in her home?

Zhai Liang sent a message over, “What are you doing? I didn’t see you all day long.”

He replied: “Looking after the house.”

Zhai Liang: “??? You’re not home.”

He turned on the computer and concentrated on looking over some work-related information. After an hour, he received a call from Qiao Jing Jing.

“Yu Tu, I’ll tell you a piece of good news.”

“Did you get the role?”

“More or less, but the most important thing is… Director Li said…” Qiao Jing Jing’s tone was very ecstatic, so Yu Tu thought that the great director must have given her some kind of acknowledgment. He was about to listen with full attention, when he heard a joyful announcement from that side.

“He said I’m too thin!”

Yu Tu: “…”

“You’re still in my house, right? Come down. Let’s go freeload a meal.”

When Yu Tu arrived at the underground garage, Xiao Zhu waved at him from the car. He walked over and got into the car. Qiao Jing Jing said, “Today is the birthday of big sister Ling’s husband, so she went home first. We’ll go to her house to freeload a meal and give her a surprise.”

Yu Tu: “…Are you sure it is a surprise?”

When they arrived at big sister Ling’s home and she opened the door to see Qiao Jing Jing, sure enough, there was a look of “why can’t I get rid of you?” But when Qiao Jing Jing gave her a TF (Tiffany) necklace, she then grinned from ear to ear.

A Guo walked over carrying his daughter and said with grievance: “Teacher Qiao, it is my birthday ah.”

Qiao Jing Jing felt justified, saying, “By giving a present to your wife, I am helping you to save money. Don’t tell me that’s not the same as giving a present to you? If you’re really not happy about it, you can take it to the store to exchange for something you can use.”

A Guo: “…”

Big sister Ling had already seen Yu Tu, and her eyes had been shining for a long time. “This must be teacher Yu?”

“Just call me Yu Tu.” Yu Tu said apologetically, “I’m sorry for not preparing a present and coming empty-handed.”

“No need. It is good enough that you’ve come. Previously, Jing Jing would not let me go over to her place.” Big sister Ling could not help but complain a bit.

They went into the house and were invited to sit down. Big sister Ling restrained herself for a while, but then still leaned over and asked, “Teacher Yu, are you interested in joining our entertainment circle? Currently, the circle most lacks people in your age group. It is not too late for you to make your debut.”

Qiao Jing Jing really wanted to roll her eyes, because she knew this would happen.

With great difficulty, she managed to make her give up this idea. Big sister Ling said, “I think we might as well call Xiao Zhu, Dan Dan and the others, and we’ll have some lively fun. They’re all staff of the studio. Do you mind teacher Yu?”

Of course, Yu Tu had no objections. Qiao Jing Jing also nodded in agreement.

When those several young people from the studio arrived, the atmosphere became lively at once. Big sister Ling straightaway also ordered a hot pot. Everyone enjoyed hot pot together.

The young people from the studio had never met Yu Tu, but they had been curious about him for a long time. Thus they giggled and sized him up surreptitiously. Big sister Ling coughed once, reminding them to pay attention to their image.

Qiao Jing Jing calmly said: “It’s okay. Teacher Yu was already rather accustomed to this kind of situation back when he was in junior and senior high school.”

Teacher Yu: “… Junior high school?”

Qiao Jing Jing said: “I was also your schoolmate in junior high school. During third year in junior high school, our two junior highs merged. You were in class number one. I was in class number fourteen.”

Yu Tu was a little surprised.

Qiao Jing Jing seized the opportunity to snatch his spoonful of beef that he had cooked.

“Aiya Jing Jing, did your school allocate the classes according to the grades?” Big sister Ling teased.

“You have watched too many idol dramas.” Qiao Jing Jing glared at her, “I had pretty good grades in junior high school, all right? Otherwise, how could I get into the same high school as teacher Yu? It was only after we were in high school that I was crushed by the IQ of annoying people like teacher Yu.”

The annoying teacher Yu was quietly cooking a new spoonful of beef beside them.

Xiao Zhu immediately spoke up to support her boss: “It’s okay, Jing Jing. Didn’t you always claim that you relied on beauty and your figure … Hey, why are you eating so much meat?”

“Let her eat la. Director Li requested it,” Big sister Ling explained with one sentence. Then she remembered what had happened when they met the director in the afternoon, and she couldn’t help grumbling to everyone.

“Don’t you think he is a weirdo? I have never met this kind of idiot who tries to trip people up to their face. The whole expression on Duan Wu’s face changed right away.”

Duan Wu was the male actor whom Director Li met today. Speaking of which, his popularity was slightly lower than Qiao Jing Jing’s, but his acting skills were quite good.

Qiao Jing Jing said, “After that, Duan Wu sent me a WeChat message, saying that his company has already decided to change agents for him next year.”

“He should change. That agent was holding him up.” While saying that, big sister Ling seemed to be pondering something. “Oh, so that’s what it was. Big companies are just problematic. Could it be that idiot is trying to boost his next up-and-coming artist? He did not even bother to care about Duan Wu. The guy is just too greedy and just shameless trying to get what he wants.” Why do these people just not understand? By messing you up, does he really think she can climb up?”

“Don’t even care about him. I was the MVP anyway.” Qiao Jing Jing proudly said to Yu Tu, “Oh teacher Yu, I did not make you lose face.”

Off to the side, A Guo felt dejected. “I’ve also been your teacher. How can you so easily switch to another teacher?”

“This won’t do.” Not even eating hotpot anymore, he put down his chopsticks. “Teacher Yu, let’s play solo.”

“Start a game, start, start.” Qiao Jing Jing encouraged them from the sidelines. “Teacher Yu, don’t be lenient on him just because he is the birthday boy.”

Yu Tu readily went along with this.

After three matches, A Guo put down his mobile phone. Internally injured, he said: “Let’s just have hot pot.”

He needed some nourishment to recuperate.

After they finished having hot pot, those who wanted to drink started drinking, and those who wanted to play games went to play games. Those young people from the studio were playing in the dining room. In the living room, Qiao Jing Jing was playing with big sister Ling’s daughter on the sofa, while listening to A Guo chatting with Yu Tu on the other side of the sofa.

They first chatted about gaming for a while and then continued to chat about the gaming companies’ shares. Then the topic led to a discussion about Hong Kong and US shares. Yu Tu was quite insightful about this, which made A Guo rather curious. “Teacher Yu, what do you do?”

He heard Yu Tu answered: “I’ll be going to Zhong (China) X next month.”

“Oh, investment banking. No wonder.”

Qiao Jing Jing was surprised.

The two chatted for a while. Then A Guo was pulled over to play Texas Hold’em. Yu Tu tactfully declined the invitation, took a glass of wine, and went out to the balcony.

The city under his feet was shining with bright lights.

Qiao Jing Jing gave the cute little girl back to big sister Ling. She walked over to him and tilted her head to the side to look at him. “Are you really planning on going into investment banking?”

“Yes.”

“When I was in high school, I had always admired you.” Qiao Jing Jing suddenly said.

Yu Tu looked at her.

Qiao Jing Jing appeared calm: “Because you always scored full marks in mathematics and physics. At that time, I thought, this classmate will probably become a very amazing scientist in the future. If that’s, I’ll also bask in his glory.

“… as your classmate.” Qiao Jing Jing quickly added that.

Yu Tu smiled, “I’ll probably disappoint you.”

“No, investment banking is also very good.” Qiao Jing Jing did not let herself show any expressions of regret. She said in an especially brisk tone, “I feel that you’ll be awesome in whatever you do.”

He was afraid he likely would not be  as awesome as that Mr. Su (Jing Jing’s ex-boyfriend) when it came to the field of finance. This thought suddenly flashed through Yu Tu’s mind, and then he paused. His heart could not help feeling shocked.

Why did he even think about comparing himself to that other person?

Yu Tu took a sip of wine and suddenly said, “Someone once said I am very selfish.”

Qiao Jing Jing looked at him with question marks in her eyes.

“I obviously have the ability to let my family live a better life, but I selfishly let my family sacrifice for my so-called dream.”

Qiao Jing Jing frowned. “You should tell him, ‘I’m sorry, I really do only have this ability.'”

Yu Tu raised his eyebrows slightly.

Qiao Jing Jing said, “You should think about it this way. What if you weren’t like you are now, where you are able to do everything well, and you’re only able to do one thing well? In fact, according to popular standards, that’s also very good. Would someone still say you’re selfish? That person said you are selfish, because you have too many types abilities that are outstanding. But how can you be blamed for being outstanding?”

After Qiao Jing Jing finished speaking all this in one breath, she also thought for a moment and nodded. “I think my logic is sound.”

Yu Tu suddenly smiled.

He felt that he simply must be sick. He had deliberately said those words just now. Indeed, someone did say those words to him six or seven years ago. He once took exception to them, but sometimes, he too, would get confused.

He inexplicably wanted to know what Qiao Jing Jing would think.

In the end, her reply was so …… fallacious in reasoning and absurd?

“That’s not right?” Qiao Jing Jing tilted her head to look at him.

“It’s right.”

Yu Tu moved his glance from her face. Suddenly a sentence, one that he did not even know where he had seen it before, popped up in his mind. “You look so good, so anything you say is right.”

Qiao Jing Jing said with feeling, “I didn’t think there would be a day that we could talk about these things.”

Yu Tu said, “In comparison, it’s even more strange for me to be teaching you how to play games.”

“I deceived you.” Qiao Jing Jing turned his words back on him. Then she remembered that there was something to ask. “You said you’ll be going over to investment banking next month. So when exactly will that be?”

“Probably in the middle third of the month.”

“Then you can continue to teach me until the exhibition match?”

“Yes, I can.” Yu Tu replied succinctly and firmly.

Qiao Jing Jing felt a little happy.

The warm breeze blew on her hair. She was leaning on the balcony railing and happily thinking, they were already considered friends now, right?
