Fangirling Chinese Novels

Boss and Me (杉杉来了): Episode 15 & 16 Review & Recap

These 2 episodes are basically about Shan Shan’s doubts and insecurities over her relationship with Feng Teng as reflected in the rumor on Li Shu as Feng Teng’s secret lover and the Valentine’s Day celebration incidents. All these serve to strengthen their relationship further. By the way, I found out that the cut-off at the end of the episode for the live broadcast is different from the youtube version. Youtube version has more scenes towards the end of the episode which is why they cannot release the last episode of the day as it’ll also include part of the 1st episode for the next day.

I know most people prefer listening to their real voices including me, as they sound more natural. However, I want to complain that Zhang Han seems to mumble his dialogues quiet a fair bit. Hence, I’ve great difficulty subbing his parts as you all should know by now, I can’t read Chinese except a few words. I depend on the talking to sub so there is high probability that I could have subbed wrongly not only his parts but other parts as well. I did doubt my Mandarin listening ability but I’ve since confirmed with Hui3r who is also watching the drama that he doesn’t speak clearly. I am not being critical here but to inform you that if you found any errors in my subbing, it is all Zhang Han’s fault:P

Boss and Me (杉杉来了): Episode 13 & 14 Review & Recap

If you don’t know better you’ll think Li Shu is the main actress with the amount of screen time she has in these 2 episodes.  For me, the highlight is Shan Shan and Feng Teng’s clothes. Every outfits also very nice and cute, especially Shan Shan’s white earmuffs.  Feng Teng’s clothes are also very fashionable and accentuate his height.  For your information, the image design team is from Korea, the same team behind ‘Boys Before Flowers’ and ‘Secret Garden’.  I was busy cooking and eating my dinner so I didn’t pay much attention to the drama except the OTP scenes so my review will be patchy.

Boss and Me (杉杉来了): Episode 12 Review & Recap

This is one of my favorite episode which is why I am taking to long to write:) Like my cover picture,  Shan Shan and Feng Teng are just so cute and sweet from the radish field to them reading books at home. Oh, after finishing this drama I may end up getting diabetes:P  Phong, you must not miss this episode. Also, I want to thank bongsd again for her wonderful screen captures and being able to work around my schedule as I take forever to finish a post. I’ve never posted daily before so this is hard as I am such a perfectionist and I’ve a full-time job:(

Boss and Me (杉杉来了): Episode 11 Review & Recap

This episode is mainly about Shan Shan encountering some problems while on her way back to her hometown to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Needless to say Big Boss rescues her, as well as kidnaps her to his house. I like their interactions from the police station to his family residence. Both of them acted every well , their every expressions and words are priceless:) Oh, Shan Shan, you are just too cute for words, LOL. Next episode is also one of my favorite parts of the novel.

By the way, lidge wants to complain about  the English used in the opening credits.  It’s like they used google translate lol. There’s “genral supervise”??? “string” wth???? then there’s “scripwreter”??? haha…I did notice but I am not so petty or such a perfectionist in English like lidge:P  But I do agree with her as to why they have to add English to the opening credits and spell them wrongly. If you must add, at least make sure it’s correct.  How hard is it to look at an English movie and just copy words like “producer” and “scriptwriter”???

Boss and Me (杉杉来了): Episode 10 Review & Recap

I am exhausted because this episode has taken me a long time to sub and write a review due to many sweet OTP interactions. The fish bone chocking, the party and the confession parts are all my favorite parts of the novel. The first half of the drama is nice but the last half is a bit dull.

I don’t have much time so you’ve to read my subbing in my review. You can put my subbing in the video but please credit me and lidge as both of us did spend a lot of time and effort to translate the novel and sub the OTP parts of the drama.  Lidge didn’t sub the drama but I did use some of her novel translations in the sub. Also, please overlook any errors or omissions as I can’t be perfect but do try my best.

Boss and Me (杉杉来了): Episode 8 & 9 Review & Recap

Episode 8 is pretty and funny with the staff excursion but I still feel the book is better except Feng Teng piggyback Shan Shan bit isn’t in the novel. Then episode 9 doesn’t have much on Feng Teng and Shan Shan and is addition to the novel until the last part so I didn’t pay much attention.

Subbing is such hard work, took so much of my time. Hence, is it useful or not to help you to understand the drama? If not, I’ll stop doing it as I don’t want to waste my time and effort. I did intend to sub the drama but I am poor at IT so don’t know how to use the software. More over I am only one person so it is impossible to sub the whole drama alone. Also, I only like to sub the OTP parts but I can’t leave other parts blank if I officially sub the drama. Thus, this mini-sub is the best I can do for you.

Boss and Me (杉杉来了): Episode 7 Review & Recap

Yuan Li Shu who is Feng Teng and Feng Yue’s friend since childhood will make her appearance in episode 7. I want to make myself clear that I don’t like her so my review will mention as little as possible about her. If you don’t know by now, my brief review focuses mainly on Shan Shan and Feng Teng. I feel my previous two reviews are too patchy and random. Also, I take pity on those who cannot understand Mandarin and have to watch it raw so I’ll try to do mini-subtitles for parts that I like or we have translated. I may edit my previous 2 reviews to include some subbing. As far as I know, nobody is subbing it into English but you can check viki occasionally and you may be surprised.

Boss and Me (杉杉来了): Episode 4 – 6 Review

First and foremost a very big thank you to bongsd for her tremendous effort in helping me to screen capture so beautifully. I’ll treat her beef noodle if I get to meet her but she has to pick the vege for me, LOL..  Episode 4  is pretty funny as it is mostly about Shan Shan stuffing herself with food. That girl can really eat and so does lidge, haha….Episode 5 is still okay but episode 6 is rather dull because Feng Teng has gone overseas for business:( I want to complain and warn everyone once again that the live version has quite a fair bit cut-out compared to the youtube version:(

Boss and Me (杉杉来了): Episode 1 – 3 Review

Yay ! Shan Shan has come ! I’ll write a brief review of my impression on the first 3 episodes which I was fortunate to watch live on tv. However, I notice that some scenes have been cut compared to the version uploaded on youtube. If you cannot wait like me and want to watch it live, you can try this link or this link then click on Jiangsu TV ( 江苏卫视) which is in the middle of the second row. It is on at 7.30pm until 10.00pm China time zone. But I better warn you that the streaming is slow and it is difficult to load when the drama is broadcasting because too many people are accessing it. Hence it is better that you wait for a while until they are uploaded in youtube which has the full version. If you cannot wait, then go to Chinese’s sohu or the western’s dailymotion which have the same live version? Click here for lidge’s Viet subs!

In a nutshell, I am giving it my seal of approval. Remember, where in the novel, I stolel that line from LOL? The drama is cute, funny, fluffy and sweet. I feel the adaptation has done the book justice and certain scenes are even more funny than purely reading the book. Some changes are needed to make the drama more entertaining and differentiate itself from the novel. Hence, I recommend you to watch it even if you can’t understand Mandarin. It follows the book fairly closely with some additions but by using our translation as the basis, you should be able to guess most of the plot. In view that the drama turned out to be much better than I anticipated, I may do live blogging so check back often.

Are you watching it? Are you enjoying it as much as us? Thanks to bongsd for helping me with the screen capture as I had a hard time doing it since it is my first time. Continue reading

Boss & Me (杉杉来了) Drama Extended Trailer with English Subtitles & Songs

Peanuts: 8 July UPDATE – I’ve included the theme song sang by Zhang Han as well as the ending song. Do you like them? For your information, the drama will be airing (3 episodes per night except 2 episodes on Sat & Sun so ending on next Sat) at 7.30pm tonight (China time zone) on  Jiangsu Satellite TV so stop hounding me for link to watch the drama as I don’t possess a bootleg version. I am all for sharing is caring so I am not watching it in secret:P Oh, I am watching it live now, simultaneously with China:) Lidge, you can never beat me so wait for your Viet sub & eat my dust, LOL.

The extended drama trailer has been released today pending the drama release on July 8th. I have managed to translate it into English in record-breaking time thanks to lidge’s great help:P Please forgive us for any errors or omissions. My my, such hard work. This means we are not going to sub the drama since it is so laborious and time-consuming. Plus, we have already translated the novel so no point to duplicate it by subbing. I’ll probably do a review since I don’t know how to do recaps. In the meantime, enjoy the trailer until Tuesday for the real deal.

Overall, the drama seems to follow the novel rather closely except with a new character Zheng Qi as Feng Teng’s friend and a match for Li Shu. Hence, the story between Feng Teng and Li Shu is expanded to create more tension for him and Shan Shan. Also, Shan Shan is really pregnant in the drama compared to a mistaken pregnancy in the novel. From the trailer, Zhao Li Ying looks promising as the cute Shan Shan, but sadly I feel Zhang Han is not portraying Feng Teng to my liking. He seems cold, not cool and not playful enough. Their chemistry is serviceable but not earth shattering. I’ve to agree with bongsd that she is still best with you know who lol. Happy birthday Xiao Xiao!!!
