You’re My Glory (你是我的荣耀) – Revised Chapter 36

I’ve been sick lately but feeling better now. My editor is on vacation. Hence, there won’t be much activity on this blog until Nov.

Before the novel was published in May, Gu Man revised chapter 36 to expand a little to connect better to chapter 35. In fact, she made more substantial revision to chapter 36 but after letting a few readers to take a look, they still think the original version is better. Thus, she quietly changed back. She lamented that making revision is really tiring. I’ve translated the revised chapter 36 to let you decide which version you like better.

Revised Chapter 36 (translated by peanuts and edited by hoju)

For the rest of the journey, Qiao Jing Jing really did sit in the front and help Yu Tu turn on the navigation for the entire way. However, she suddenly refused to talk to him anymore. The longest sentence she said was probably to answer him what her address was.

It was almost twelve o’clock when they arrived at Jing City. The car stopped at the doorway of Qiao Jing Jing’s family’s villa-style home. After turning off the engine, neither of them was in a hurry to get off the car.

The villa next door was brightly lit, and there were faint sounds of mahjong and lively talking coming from it. Suddenly, a few fireworks bloomed in the sky, but soon after silence returned.

Yu Tu brought his gaze from the sky back to look at Qiao Jing Jing. She was staring outside, lost in thought. She seemed to sense his gaze. Her eyelashes trembled slightly and then suddenly lowered.

“Jing Jing.” Yu Tu started to talk, but he had only called her name before she quickly interrupted him.

“Thank you for driving me back.”

Then she pushed open the car door and got out of the car.

Yu Tu sat dazedly in the car for a moment. Then, composing himself, he followed her out of the car and took out her suitcase from the boot.

It was already very late at night, and the temperature outside the car was even lower. Qiao Jing Jing stood by the side of the car, but she didn’t feel cold at all.  When she thought about her weak and disappointing performance at the highway service area, her face was still a little hot.

Yu Tu handed the suitcase and car keys to her. She quickly reached out her hands to take them.

“I am going now.”

But she could not move the suitcase.

Yu Tu gripped the suitcase handle firmly. Qiao Jing Jing raised her head to look at him. Yu Tu stared at her and asked, “When are you going back to Shanghai?”

Qiao Jing Jing didn’t want to answer him, so she lowered her head to look at the decorative design on the suitcase.

Yu Tu patiently changed the way he posed his inquiry: “Xiao Zhu said that you will return to Shanghai on the fourth day of Chinese New Year, and on the morning of the fifth day you will fly somewhere for filming. Is that right?”

Her itinerary had been completely sold by her foolish assistant. Qiao Jing Jing answered with a gloomy voice, “More or less like that.”

“I got it.” Yu Tu loosened his grip on the suitcase, “Happy Chinese New Year.”

Even if you know it, so what?

“……Happy Chinese New Year.”

She hurriedly gave this brief reply and dragged the suitcase towards the doorway. But at the doorway of the house, before pressing the doorbell, she couldn’t help turning around.

Yu Tu was still standing in the same place.

Perhaps because of the darkness of the night, the way he stood there under the streetlight, and looked at her inexplicably made her feel he was gentle and lonely.

Suddenly her hand was unable to continue pressing the doorbell.

She did not know why she asked, “How will you go back?”

“I will walk back. My home is not far from here.”

“When you arrive at your home…”

She stopped talking just in time.

But he immediately replied, “Okay.”

“I won’t reply to you.”

“Okay.”

Qiao Jing Jing glared at him angrily.

The villa behind her suddenly grew noisy. The people inside seemed to have discovered the movement at the doorway, and there were sound of footsteps coming towards the doorway.

Yu Tu glanced at the villa, then looked at her and smiled faintly. “Good night.”

He turned and left.

The door of the villa soon opened. Her parents and relatives rushed out, happily gathering around her and ushering her inside. Mrs Qiao looked around, then asked, “Where is your driver?”

Driver, uh…

She couldn’t help turning around for a look, but her relatives obstructed her view, and she couldn’t see anything.

Qiao Jing Jing did not know why she suddenly wanted to play video game, wanted to play mahjong, wanted to eat a late-night snack, and wanted to do a lot of other things. But when she was holding a rice bowl and occupying her father’s mahjong place, her mind kept wandering. One time, she had tossed out a tile that let someone else win and she had not even noticed, making Mr Qiao want to kick her off the mahjong table.

After losing a few rounds, a message popped up on her mobile phone, which was beside her hand.

“I’ve arrived home.”

Suddenly Qiao Jing Jing lost her mood to continue playing and gave the seat back to Mr Qiao. She took her phone and ran to the living room sofa, where she sat alone.

It had been half an hour. Didn’t he say his home was very close. Why did it take so long?

Was his home still the same one, in the old district?

“Sis, why are you playing with your mobile phone on New Year’s Day. Let’s start another table.” Her younger male cousin sneakily came over.

Qiao Jing Jing avoided him. “What are you doing?”

“Let’s start another table. We don’t mind your poor mahjong skills.”

Another two younger cousins also came over to persuade her. Qiao Jing Jing was reluctantly pulled up from the sofa by them. “I’ll only play for a while.”

The younger girl and boy cousins cheered and then went to clear up a table and grab a mahjong set.

It was almost one o’clock in the morning, yet the house was still full of laughter and cheerful talking. Qiao Jing Jing held her mobile phone and stood in the living room, looking at her lively, excited relatives. She did not know why, but a thought crossed her mind:

She hoped that, in such a setting, he was here.

Yu Tu waited for more than ten minutes outside his house, but there were no signs at all of activity on WeChat. He sighed, took out his key, and was about to open the door, but the door was opened from inside.

When Mrs Yu opened the door and saw him, she complained, “I knew I heard movement. You arrived home already.  Why didn’t you come in?”

Yu Tu put away his key. “Didn’t I tell you there is no need to wait for me? Why aren’t you asleep?”

Mrs Yu said, “You still hadn’t gotten back yet. How could we not worry? What did you go to do? You’ve been nowhere in sight on New Year’s Day.”

Yu Tu lowered his head to change shoes. “Nothing.”

<>Copyright of Fanatical, hui3r[dot]wordpress[dot]com. If you are not reading this from hui3r[dot]wordpress[dot]com, this translation was taken without consent of the translator.

Mrs Yu looked at his expression and didn’t continue asking further. The whole family very quickly washed up and went to bed.

Lying in bed, Mrs Yu tossed and turned and could not sleep.

Mr Yu was disturbed by her movements, until he also could not sleep well. He complained, “Why are you tossing and turning?”

“Aiya.” Mrs Yu heaved a long sigh. “I didn’t tell you, last time when Yu Tu came back, he told me that he has taken a fancy to a girl. She is beautiful but does not know how to take care of people. I pondered over this, and decided that that is fine. Ever since he was a child, just when has Yu Tu ever shared his thoughts with us? From the looks of things, he really does like her. But today, I feel bothered and displeased.”

She analyzed, “He must have gone to see that girl today. Seeing how dazed and down he looks, I reckon that he didn’t get any kind treatment. Since he was a child, there have been so many girls who like our son; when has he ever pursued a girl? How beautiful, then, is this girl to make him like this? Moreover, she asked him to go out all day on New Year’s Day, and then he came back so late. That is very unthoughtful. I am afraid it will be difficult to get along with her in the future.”

The more she said, the more upset she became. She could not keep her mood from fluctuating. “A few days ago, my sister said to me that she wants to introduce a girl to him. The girl’s family has a factory, and she is also highly educated. My sister said that the girl didn’t even look at the photo and was very willing after just hearing his name. She said she is Yu Tu’s high school schoolmate, two years his junior. I replied that he seems to have a girlfriend and declined for him. But, okay, yes I can let it slide that she does not know how to take care of people, but it is not acceptable that she is unthoughtful…”

She gave Mr Yu, who had not spoken from beginning to end, a push. “How about I talk to Yu Tu tomorrow about this and tell him to meet this other girl too? What do you think? Maybe they’ll take a liking to each other. My sister sent the girl’s photo over. She’s quite pretty, too. It might be that she is even prettier than that one he is chasing now.”

“Why are you so worried?” Mr Yu yawned, “They still aren’t dating yet. Maybe Yu Tu will fail to catch her, and then you’ve worried for nothing, right? Let’s just go to sleep.”

Mrs Yu was annoyed and beat him with her fist. Then she turned over angrily and went to sleep.

Totally oblivious that she had been labelled “unthoughtful and hard to get along with,” Qiao Jing Jing, had scattered and fragmented dreams the whole night. The next day, she woke up with a heavy head, got out of bed with her eyes half-closed, and almost stepped on something.

Oh, wait, it was a person.

The person sitting on the floor and leaning against the bed discovered that she was awake, stood up with her mobile phone, and said happily, “You finally woke up!”

After saying that, she immediately bowed her head, both her hands swiping and tapping incessantly and she happily and excitedly said. “I can finally switch on the sound. There’s really no mood when you game with the sound muted.”

Then the sound effects of King of Glory immediately started up.

Qiao Jing Jing: “……”

She went to brush her teeth and wash her face. When she came back, Pei Pei had finally finished playing and was sitting on the bed and sizing her up in a sly manner.

Qiao Jing Jing: “… What are you doing?”

Pei Pei picked up Qiao Jing Jing’s mobile phone and waggled it. “I didn’t mean to look at it. The message popped up itself. Yu Tu asked you whether you’ve woken up.”

Qiao Jing Jing: “……”

She took the phone and glanced at it, but she did not reply.

Pei Pei moved close to her. “Let me see your chat history with him.”

Qiao Jing Jing immediately turned it off. “No.”

“Hateful.” Pei Pei gave her a nudge and did not give up asking. “Hee hee, what is the relationship between you and Yu Tu now?”

Qiao Jing Jing said, “Senior high school classmates.”

Pei Pei: “…… I’m telling you, as your loyal supporter, I watch all your events, so of course I also watched the exhibition match, okay? When I saw Yu Tu going onto the stage, my jaw dropped. When did you contact each other?”

Qiao Jing Jing. “In the game.”

Pei Pei’s eyes opened wide. “Then both of you met in real life. Then he really taught you how to play games?”

One sentence summary: “More or less.”

Pei Pei immediately became very excited. “The godly student taught you how to play games. Then your dream has been realized?”

… Good friends of many years are so annoying. She basically knew her mental state inside out.

Qiao Jing Jing changed the topic. “How did you also start playing games?”

“From watching your exhibition match! I thought it seemed very interesting. My husband used to play before, so he can just bring me along. Oh, by the way, do you use WeChat or QQ to log in? You rarely use that WeChat account called Glittering (Shan Shan Fa Guang) to play. Is it because you have another account?”

“I use an alternate account.”

“Add me. Add me.”

“Your WeChat? I use QQ.”

“… As an adult, why do you want to use QQ!”

“Probably in order to not form a team with you.”

Pei Pei jumped up: “I am already gold level!”

“……Oh.”

Indifference.

Pei Pei spent some time at her house, then went home for a dinner party. Qiao Jing Jing also had a bunch of dinner parties one after another in the next while. Fortunately the movie afterwards with Director Li requested her to increase weight.

After dinner on the third day of Chinese New Year, Pei Pei dropped by again. After hanging out in Qiao Jing Jing’s room and playing for a while, she felt a bit bored and urged, “How about we go out to play? Jing City has changed a lot in the past two years. Over along the lake, Dongjiu is really beautifully.”

She took out her mobile phone and let Qiao Jing Jing look at the photos. “There are some small cafes that all have a really pleasant ambiance. They all have small private rooms, so if you go in you shouldn’t be discovered. We can take in the lake view. So do you want to go?”

Qiao Jing Jing looked at the photos, a little interested. “It’s too late now.”

Pei Pei was speechless. “It’s only seven o’clock! Are you even a person who lives in a big city? And anyway, we are just going to look at the nightscape.”

Qiao Jing Jing considered for a while. “Okay.”

Going out could be good. That way she would not be at home and always unable to resist looking at WeChat. What if she accidentally replied to his message?

<>Copyright of Fanatical, hui3r[dot]wordpress[dot]com. If you are not reading this from hui3r[dot]wordpress[dot]com, this translation was taken without consent of the translator.

In the end, the main activity at the cafe was still just checking her phone.

It must be because, after chatting for a while, Pei Pei started to play video games. Qiao Jing Jing irresponsibly pushed the responsibility onto her good friend.

While listening to the sound effects from Pei Pei’s game, Qiao Jing Jing was bored and browsed though Moments (social networking function of smartphone app WeChat) and her public account. Then she accidentally opened Yu Tu’s WeChat.

“Hey, you haven’t replied to so many of Yu Tu’s WeChat messages?”

There weren’t “many”, only one each in the morning, afternoon, and night.

Wait, something was wrong!

Qiao Jing Jing immediately switched off her mobile phone and pushed away the head that was right next to her. “What are you doing? Concentrate on playing your game.”

“It’s over.”

Pei Pei grabbed her arm. “Let me see. Didn’t I screenshot hundreds of chat records and send them to you when I was dating my husband?”

Qiao Jing Jing snapped, “Did I ask for it? And it took up my mobile phone memory, too!”

“So petty.” Pei Pei sat back on her chair opposite Qiao Jing Jing. “Humph! Even you don’t say anything, I can still guess. I found Yu Tu’s driver’s license in your car just a little while ago.”

Qiao Jing Jing was surprised.

Driver’s license?

Oh, that’s right. Later on the day before yesterday, she had gone to sit in the front, but Yu Tu’s driver’s license had been left in the back seat. She had completely forgotten about it. But why didn’t Yu Tu  remember to take it back either?

“I didn’t mean to look at it. I saw it when I put my down jacket in the back seat. I thought it was yours, so I opened it and took a look. Aiya! I haven’t seen the big godly student for a long time, but from the photo, he is still as handsome as before.” She sighed, then changed the tone of her voice. “So, Miss Jing Jing, why were both of you in the same car together and what did both of you do in the back seat?”

Qiao Jing Jing: “… We did nothing.”

Yesterday, he drove the car to the front of her house and then left. Because her parents came out later and did not see the driver, they had been suspecting this whole time that she drove the car back herself.

But this honest reply obviously did not convince Pei Pei, who must have imagined other things. She disdainfully said, “As if I’ll believe you. But I’ll let it be. I won’t force you.”

“Actually, this feels rather awesome to me. When have you ever seen Godly Student Yu like this, huh? But Jing Jing, are you interested in him? If you are interested, don’t always give him the cold shoulder. The godly student has his pride, too,” Pei Pei warned her.

Qiao Jing Jing took a sip of fruit juice. She did not always give him the cold shoulder. She merely intend to give him the cold shoulder for two months.

Since Pei Pei couldn’t dig up any gossip, she played on her phone again.

The small private room was a bit quiet.

Qiao Jing Jing recalled how they had been like this during their school days too. During the holidays, they would find a place to do homework together, read novels together, and chat about those secrets and thoughts.

At that time, Pei Pei also liked a boy, but she later ended up marrying another person and living a happy and blessed life.

She also used to think that her life would never have Yu Tu in it again.

If she did not get together with Yu Tu, would she be happy?

Definitely yes. She would give herself a very good life.

But inevitably there would be somewhere that was just not same.

<>Copyright of Fanatical, hui3r[dot]wordpress[dot]com. If you are not reading this from hui3r[dot]wordpress[dot]com, this translation was taken without consent of the translator.

Pei Pei suddenly cried out in alarm, “I’m going to faint! Jing Jing, we were still discovered.”

Qiao Jing Jing’s mind came back to the present. “What?”

“It seems like a passerby took our photo and uploaded it to his Moments (social networking function of smartphone app WeChat). Then it was forwarded around until it arrived in our class chat group. The people in the group are currently discussing about you and have also @ me.” She pushed the phone over to let her see.

Qiao Jing Jing bowed her head and took a look. The people in the senior high school class group chat were passing news back and forth at lightning speed.

“@PeiPei, are you with Qiao Jing Jing?”

“Where are you? Supposedly you were photographed in the underground car park at Dongjiu.”

“@PeiPei, quite a lot of classmates are having a gathering and singing at the KTV. Tell Qiao Jing Jing and bring her along.”

“Yes, yes, all of us haven’t seen one another for more than a decade.”

“Come on, the big star surely won’t come.”

<>Copyright of Fanatical, hui3r[dot]wordpress[dot]com. If you are not reading this from hui3r[dot]wordpress[dot]com, this translation was taken without consent of the translator.

Qiao Jing Jing flipped back through the chat to look at the list of people at the KTV gathering and then, unconcerned, returned the phone to Pei Pei.

Pei Pei took the phone and said firmly, “I’ve decided to play dead.”

She idly played with her phone for a while. Suddenly, she had a thought and said, “Jing Jing, let me play with your King of Glory account for a while, ok? I want to experience the feeling of playing a high-level game.”

Qiao Jing Jing: “… Do you want to bring disaster on some poor people?”

Pei Pei disagreed, “I also play reasonably well, okay? It’s just that I don’t always play ranked match. So will you let me or not? ~~~”

Qiao Jing Jing was really worried that she would cause her to be reported, but looking at her pleading face, she had no choice but to start the game and hand her the phone. “If you’re no match for them, remember to give me the mobile phone.”

After saying this, she was dazed for a bit because this sentence was one often said to her by someone. Who would have thought it was her turn to say it to someone else today?

“Okay, got it.” Pei Pei happily grabbed the phone.

In the end, her courage was all talk only. After looking at the start-up page of Qiao Jing Jing’s account, suddenly she was scared. “Forget it, I’m still a little afraid.”

She browsed around in Qiao Jing Jing’s account and made some comments from time to time. “Your ID is really mystical. What the hell is pick cotton? … Wow, the win rate ranking is so high… Number ten in Shanghai for playing with Balli Shouyue … Hey, you also have two unique Pentakills (killing all 5 enemy champions in quick succession in one battle).”

Qiao Jing Jing was surprised. “What?”

“Unique Pentakill. You’ve forgotten what you achieved?”

<>Copyright of Fanatical, hui3r[dot]wordpress[dot]com. If you are not reading this from hui3r[dot]wordpress[dot]com, this translation was taken without consent of the translator.

Qiao Jing Jing was puzzled and took the phone back.

Listed under “Battle Information” is the a player’s overall statistics for each kind of battle data, and at the bottom, it will show the number of MVPs, triple kills, quadra kills, pentakills, and legendary kills (killing more than five enemy champions consecutively) achieved. Her other data was normal, but beside “unique pentakill,” there really was “2.”

This meant that she had achieved two unique Pentakills.

However, this number clearly had still been “0” before she took part in the exhibition match. And she had not played the game again since the exhibition match.

Where did these two Pentakills come from?

Something vaguely flashed through her mind. Qiao Jing Jing hastily opened her “Battle Record.”

Then her gaze stilled.

“Jing Jing, Jing Jing?”

A few minutes later, Pei Pei saw that she was still staring at the game interface, and she couldn’t help but call her.

Qiao Jing Jing seemed as if she was startled out of a dream. She put down her mobile phone, but her eyes were still a little dazed.

Pei Pei waved her hand in front of Qiao Jing Jing: “What’s the matter with you?”

Qiao Jing Jing didn’t move. After a long moment, she sighed softly and looked up at Pei Pei. “Our senior high school classmates are having a gathering in the KTV tonight?”

“Yes ah.”

“I want to go now.”

“Ah?” Pei Pei stared blankly at her.

“Give me your phone.”

Expressionless, Pei Pei unlocked her phone and gave it to her. Qiao Jing Jing took the mobile phone, opened up the WeChat class group chat, and sent out a message.

Pei Pei:
Okay, I will bring her over immediately ^_^
